Restaurant Review: Vasco’s

Last week my partner and I were invited to try out Vasco’s Restaurant. This is a new buffet and al la carte restaurant which opened recently in the Hilton Hotel Durban.

It features contemporary design and plenty of space to move around.  You can sit inside or outside.

We visited Vasco’s on a Saturday when they have their Flavours of the East curry evening. If you are a fish lover you can pop by on a Friday when they have their Off the Hook seafood evening.

I tried out their Lentil Makhani Soup first.  It certainly warms you up on these cold Durban evenings we have been having.  Just be warned it has a bit of a bite to it.

Next was some of their Vegetable Pakoras which are similar to chilli bites just not as hot.  Mild in flavour.

If you want a salad you have your options of various salads they have put out or you can build your own salad.  We tried them both and I certainly preferred the build your own salad option.  The variety of salads on offer were many and I tried out some lettuce, carrots, feta cheese tomato and also a jalapeno.  Delicious with the dressing on offer. The salads were so good my partner could have had just salads all night.

Their other type of salad is the Black Eyed Peas Salad with Tikka style mushrooms.  My partner found this to be bland, the potato salad was tasty but not everyone likes potato salad with the skin on.

On their curry evening they have a wide variety of curry dishes.  I tried out the Basmati Rice, Tikka Spiced Baby Potato, Broad Bean Curry with Madumbe, Vegetable Briyani and my favourite the Tandoori Chicken.  I could not fault them they were all delicious. The Briyani was delicate on the palate. The Tandoori Chicken was full of spices and tasted amazing.

My partner also had some of the Kingklip fish on offer and simply loved it. She also had the Prawn and Chicken Curry. She did feel though that the cream in it overpowered the other flavours.

The Naan Bread is a delight. Soft and delicious.

The Restaurant certainly has a wide assortment of dessert.  I could have spent a great deal of time at the dessert section.  You will find anything from Pear and Almond Slices to Milktart Squares, Chocolate Brownies, Pudding with Chocolate Sauce, Crème Brulee and much more.

I simply loved the Chocolate Brownies.

My partner had two portions of the Crème Brulee. She found it to be divine.

There were 3 birthday parties on the go at the restaurant while we were there so it certainly is packing them in.

Rating 7/10

They are already taking bookings for Year End Functions, Christmas Parties, New Year’s Eve and for New Year.

It’s a wonderful new addition to the Durban restaurant scene.
