This week I was invited to Big Easy Durban by Ernie Els. It is a signature dish restaurant situated in the Hilton Hotel Durban. If you enjoy fine dining then this one is for you.
They had a Heritage Day Special which included a braai sharing platter served with 2 sides and sauces each. The huge platter included sirloin steak, lamb chops, chicken, wedges, a salad and your choice of sauces. Added to that was your choice of an ice-cold draft beer or glass of house wine per person. If you are a non-drinker you can always switch the drink to a soft drink of your choice. Not bad for R365 for 2 people.
The restaurant features an elegant design and beautiful lights.
My partner and I started our meal with the corn bread which tastes delicious.
When the platter came we didn’t know what to eat first. We chose the trio pepper sauce and the gorgonzola cheese sauce which was a perfect combo for our meal. The cheese sauce works well with the wedges and the pepper sauce proved wonderful with the sirloin steak.
The boerewors, sirloin, chicken and lamb were all cooked to perfection and juicy to the taste. Added to that was a fresh salad which went down well. Be warned this platter is huge so come hungry. You might even have to take some home. The chicken had a sweet sauce at first and then a chilli sauce which worked well.
My partner liked the wine and felt it went well with the platter.
We were offered dessert after so I tried the chocolate mousse with chocolate ganache. My partner tried the Amarula Crème Brule. Let’s just say that chocolate mousse is huge. It comes with strawberries, a meringue, candied orange peel and nut brittle. It was to die for. My partner loved her Crème Brule as well.
Next we were offered the best cappuccinos in town. Well let’s just say they were not too strong and not to weak, just right. The perfect ending to a tasty meal.
This is the place to take that significant other for a fine dining experience. You can sit inside or outside and the way the bar area is set out separate from the main restaurant it works well so that you won’t really hear the noise from the bar. Well designed.
If you are a golfing fan keep an eye out for the golfing memorabilia from Ernie Els opposite the bar. It features some interesting pictures and of course trophies.
Be sure to have a look at the Ernie Els wine collection if you are a wine lover, he has quite the collection available just for you.
They are taking bookings for Year End Functions, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day Jazz Lunch, New Year’s Eve Moët Dinner and a New Year’s Eve Party Package.
