The eThekwini Municipality in collaboration with the Mayors Migration Council is establishing the Karibu Care Centre. This is in an effort to create safe living conditions for residents and businesses in Durban.

EThekwini Municipality Mayor Councillor Mxolisi Kaunda led a site visit at the Karibu Community Care Centre in Albert Park that will assist homeless people to access skills development opportunities, meals and ablution facilities. The Karibu Care Centre will provide access to essential amenities and social services for migrants, refugees, and people that are homeless.

Earlier this week the Council authorised the City Manager to sign a memorandum of understanding between the City and the Mayors Migration Council (MMC).

The MMC is a Mayoral-led coalition that aims to foster a world where urban migrants, displaced individuals, and host communities can thrive.

‘’In eThekwini, our focus is on establishing the Karibu Community Care Centre here in Albert Park in ward 32 that assist homeless people to access skills development opportunities, meals and ablution facilities,’’ said eThekwini Municipality Mayor Councillor Mxolisi Kaunda.

Mayor Kaunda noted that the MMC had allocated R3.6 million for this project which will contribute immensely to our vision of making eThekwini the most caring and liveable city.

‘’As the leadership of the city we want to reiterate that we are ready to deliver a safe and memorable long Easter weekend and we urge our residents and visitors to cooperate with law enforcement officers both on the road and in our communities to reduce incidents of crime and road crashes,’’ continued Mayor Kaunda.
